The group met for a Sock Party at Sue and Mike’s on Friday April 24th. Brilliant hospitality as usual, lovely food and a new kitten to accompany the wines….

Here are my notes:

Cremant de Jura (Phillipe Michel)       (Welcome Wine)
This bubbly has a slightly “gluey” nose – with apple and citrus notes. Palate has a very sweet peachy fruit undercut by the citric, sherbet mousse. The mousse is quite short though, and the finish of sweet fruit again. Amazing value though from Aldi….

I Frati Lugana 2013 (Ca’ dei Frati)       (Kathryn)
This wine is made from the Turbiano grape, otherwise known as Trebbiano di Luguna, which is actually be a local version of Verdicchio.  Slightly pungent and sharp nose with an oily or nutty note. There is a drying undertone on the palate which counterpoints the wine’s very rich balance. Later a dried apricot hint making an interesting package.

Casa Valduga Leopoldina 2013 (Campahna, Brazil)              (Ann)
This Chardonnay has a slightly sappy, herby nose with hints of citrus and a little tropical fruit. The palate is quite austere, drying with a lime note underneath a warmer (orange?) citric middle palate. Good.

Monte Giove Pinot Grigio/Chardonnay della Venezie         (Andrew)
Quiet nose with a light hint of a heavy floral tone (rose petal?). Sherbet acidity with a warm citric realisation but, although cleanly made, this is rather uncharacterful.

Vasse Felix 2013 Margaret River Sauvignon/Semillon             (Sue)
Nose is quite complex and subtle, with herby hints, citrus with white fruit elements. Vary attacking acidity with a warm pithy note, long, structured and food friendly. Good.

Gevrey-Chambertin “En Songe” 2009 (Jacob)       (Laurie)
Nose has herbs, plum and later raspberry and blackberry with hints of wood. Palate has a velvety texture with a blackberry acidity leading to a warm and slightly drying finish. Pretty typical, if a lighter style, of Gevrey.

Portillo Malbec 2012 (Salentin)              (John)
Earthy nose with a herby tinge and an higher aromatic medicinal, methol note. Palate has a warm, rich slightly bitter quality, lifted by pliant acidity tinged with plum fruit in a typical Argentinian Malbec structure. Good

Petra “Zingari” IGT Toscana 2012       (Matt)
This is equal parts Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot, although it is the first two that appear most readily. The nose is quite structured with herby notes, some cherry and a brackish hint. The palate has the same qualities with the cherry sourer and longer, perhaps a touch young…

Terra d’Alter Alfrocheiro 2012 (Terras d’Alter)            (Rob)
Alfrocheiro is a widely planted Alentejo variety, allegedly similar to Pinot Noir. This wine, made by one of the first “flying winemakers” – Peter Bright, has a very aromatic nose with mulberry fruit and an earthy warmth. The palate has sweet ripe, more plum, fruit and warmth – in the senses of alcohol, spice and depth…

Coonawarra “Terra Rosso” Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (Parker)       (Kim)
This has both a minty and a cedar nose – indicating Austratlia and Cabernet. Big black fruit palate with drying acidity and grainy, but well resolved tannins. Quite long, and the structure carries the weight of the wine well…

Château Maris Vieilles Vignes Minervois La Livinière 2012        (Mike)
Immediate floral, lilies?, and blackberry nose, and medicinal (menthol) hints. – Palate has the same elements, dry middle and a vaguely chocolate finish. A softer style of Syrah-based wine and quite satisfying.

Thanks, Sue and Mike, for a lovely evening.
