The group met for a Sock Party hosted by Yvonne on Friday November 27th. A lovely evening with a run of Italian (and an Italian-ish Californian) whites….

Here are my notes:
Cremant du Jura, Chardonnay 2013 (Michel)       (Welcome Wine)
Some bready notes with some seed and nut twists on the nose. Palate has a soft frothy mousse, with an not quite bone dry balance. A good aperitif Cremant with an appetising apple-skin, citrus peel finish…

Santorini Nykteri 2014   (Santo)    (Sue Mc)
Quite a quiet nose with hints of herbs, blossom and peachy fruit. Palate has citrus peel, and warm mineral building to an oily finish. Surprisingly rich and long supported by a citric structure from Assyrtiko? (backed with Athiri & Aidani).

“Duchess White” Solaris 2014   (Sealwood Cottage Vineyard)     (Ann)
Solaris is a grape bred at Freiberg in 1975; with Riesling & Pinot Gris as two of its “great-grandparents”, and Muscat Ottonel as another “grandparent”. The wine has a pungent first nose, opening to reveal elderflower and lime. The palate too has a sharp lime acidity holding in a rather nutty flavour.

Benevento Falanghina 2014 (La Guardiense)          (Mark)
Melon, herbs, seed oil, pear drops on the nose.. With a slightly off-dry, citric framed exotic and pear fruit palate. Very Italian, combining richness with freshness. Good

Etna Bianco 2014 (Nicosia)      (Sue T)
Pears again but with a lighter floral note. Caricante and Catarratto yield a sharper acidity than the previous wine with citric and apple fruit and a honeyed greengage finishing burst. Also good!

Birichino Malvasia Bianca 2012 (Monterey)       (Kim)
Exotic fruit nose, with grape character and hints of mango and papaya. Palate has a great acid line with chalky hint holding up and balancing soft exotic fruit. A lovely sundown wine…
“Villa Marcialla” Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2013  (Fattorie Giannozzi)           (Laurie)
Light colour and a light nose with hints of cherry, and a leafy note with later chocolate impressions. The palate is similar, clean and refreshing with a gentle tannic line and good acidity with a hint of its 10% Merlot in the texture (the rest is Sangiovese). Light but satisfying, and very nicely poised….

“Peter Barlow” Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (Rustenberg)             (John)
Damson fruit, with spice and then cedar wood notes. Palate is supple with a tannic frame and good length, dark but soft fruit and leafy notes… Big boned but well balanced… good!

“Burnside Vineyard” Margaret River Grenache 2013   (McHenry Hohnen)       (Mike)
Nose has a backing spice note, nuts and cherry fruit with a sharper note later. Palate reflects the nose with drying, softly tannic, red fruit. Supple, with plums appearing at the finish. Very nice…

Châteauneuf du Pape, Font de Michelle 2006             (Rob)
Quite a rich black fruit nose, with cassis elements and a later spice note. Palate has spice first and herbs with a rich prune fruit coming through. Quite well developed with a savoury overall impression. Good.

Brazil Merlot 2013 (Serra Gaúcha)      (Yvonne)
Quite a recessed nose with light damson and hints of spice. The palate has juicy plum fruit, and a soft character but with a good acid line.

Thank you so much Yvonne, for a wonderfully convivial evening…
