The group met for a Sock Party hosted by Kathryn & Matt on Friday April 29th.

I missed it myself [that very evening drinking Valpolicella with Piemontese Sausage in Riva del Garda – such travail…] so these notes are “amplified” from notes made by the hosts.

Here they are:

SAUMUR BRUT  CUVÉE DE LA CHEVALERIE              Welcome Wine
Tart green apple, touch of honey. Strong persistant mousse. Small bubbles.

CAMEL VALLEY, DARNIBOLE BACCHUS, 2014              Ann
Bacchus is a Silvaner x Riesling cross with Müller-Thurgau (itself an older Silvaner x Riesling cross). This wine is floral, perfumed on the nose. Distinctive elderflower on the palate (which the growers attribute to a slate sub-soil). Crisp, dry and well balanced. Hints of lime and mineral notes with a white pepper edge.

CHATEAU PETIT ROUBIE, PICPOUL DE PINET, 2012      Paul
Oily nose. Lots of stone and tropical fruit and some honey. Well balanced with a long finish. Not easily identified as a Picpoul de Pinet. Unusual!

KINGS RIDGE OREGON PINOT GRIS, 2014           Sue
From the Willamette Valley. V. Vibrant and dry with bright flavours of peach, melon and pear. Hints of almond and sherbet.

SUNTORY JAPANESE WHITE PINOT NOIR, 2013        Kathryn
I recall having something like this (although sweet) from German Spätburgunder in the Rheinpfalz where the style of making a white wine from red grapes is called Weißherbst (Blanc de Noir in France).
This is rich with some zesty notes of honey. Wet wool. Similar to a Chenin Blanc.

BOURGOGNE ROUGE “LA TAUPE” 2011              Rob
This wine is made by Domaine Chavy-Chouet, a Mersault based family domaine. This wine is from an old plot in Pommard. Fresh raspberry and cherry. Light and peppery.

SANTA MARIA DEL CAMI, BINISSALEM MALLORCA 2014             Mike
Grapes: 60% Manto Negro, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Indigenous Mallorcan variety Manto Negro is blended with the more international varieties of cab sav and merlot to give a wine with depth and structure. An elegant wine with flavours of forest fruits with a twist of herbs and a hint of spicy oak.

FLORI BAROLO 2010     Anna
Plum, ripe strawberry and leather. Hints of liquorice and mint. New wave Barolo – most thought it was a Barbaresco.

RUBAIYAT MUSCAT BAILEY A, JAPAN 2013           Matt
Muscat Bailey A is a late budding hybrid created for Japanese conditions by crossing Muscat of Hamburg (sometimes called Black Muscat) with Bailey.  Smoky and spicy. Burnt forest fruit. Low tannins and a long finish

RIPASSO DI VALPOLICELLA  (FRATELLI RECCHIA) 2013        Yvonne
Full bodied with velvety smooth texture. Cherry and plum flavours with chocolate undertones. Atypical Ripasso, like a normal wine. A good Valpolicella.

CHATEAU CITRAN  (HAUT-MEDOC) 2010        John
This is 42 % Cabernet Sauvignon / 55 % Merlot / 3 % Cabernet Franc… Liquorice, plums and cassis. Violets and cigar box on the nose. Firm tannins and a long finish.
